PENTHOUSE PIED-À-TERRE
The outdoor seating areas at this penthouse pied-à-terre have a lot to live up to: exquisite interiors by one of Chicago’s leading architectural interior firms, a discerning client with exceptional taste, and unparalleled City views that must take center stage. Did we mention the wind?
The South Terrace is accessed from the Living Room and situated at the end of the unit’s central corridor. The space serves as an extension of the interior, accommodates entertaining, and puts all focus on its panoramic views. Planter locations utilize the geometry of the terrace’s floor plan to define three distinct seating groups. Planters filled with clipped topiary Lilacs align with the facade’s massive pilasters and echo the pilasters’ fluted detailing. Boxwood hedges at the east and west parapets interrupt winds without obstructing views. The fire feature’s design is mindful of practical issues – discreetly blocking winds, functioning as a coffee table, accommodating the burner and ignition system – and reflects the interior palette.
At the Primary Suite Terrace, the space serves a much different function. It is an intimate, semi-enclosed space that is most dramatic in the early evening when westward views highlight Chicago’s golden hour sunsets. Carpentry trough planters trace the west and south parapet. The east facade and south column are covered in trellises that support climbing hydrangea. Planters and trellises are painted a pale almond tone to compliment the bedroom’s millwork; similarly the foliage-focused plant palette of heuchera, tiarella, and autumn fern draws interest from its tonal and textural variations.
